Character.AI alternatives

The reasons to leave Character.AI changed this year: under-18 accounts lost character chat, the free plan runs ads and slow mode, and on October 12 the company filed for Chapter 11 to sell itself. The app still works, but if the sale finds no buyer that keeps it running, it will be wound down.

Stay on Character.AI if you are an adult who chats every day on the free plan, because unlimited free messaging is rare on this list, or you are under 18, because the apps that still let a 14-year-old into character chat check age far less than Character.AI does.

checked 2026-10-13 · Character.AI is Free tier with ads; (c.ai) lite is $4.99/mo (or $2.49/week), c.ai+ is $9.99/mo or $94.99/yr in the US App Store. Prices vary by region. · by dan scutaru

if you're leaving because you don't want to lose everything if it shuts down

SillyTavern →

better: Free, open-source software you install yourself, so there is no company to sell or wind down. Characters are portable card files and chats sit on your own disk. It works with a paid API, a model on your PC, or the volunteer-run AI Horde.

you give up: Setup means installing Node.js, and Android needs Termux, which the project does not officially support. Good models cost money or a decent GPU, and Horde volunteers could log what you send. The Character.AI importer its docs suggest is a third-party extension last updated in October 2024.

KoboldCpp →

better: No company behind it to sell or wind down: one file, no install, on Windows, Mac and Linux, running an open model on your own CPU or GPU, with chat, adventure and story modes. It imports Tavern character cards, so with a local model nothing leaves the computer.

you give up: You find and download a model yourself, and the size you can run is capped by your RAM and VRAM. No catalog, no community, no phone app beyond a Termux install. No age gate and no content rules of its own.

if you're leaving because you're under 18 and chat was switched off

ChatGPT →

better: Open from 13 with a parent's permission, free, and it will co-write a story where you play a part. Accounts it places under 18 get ChatGPT for Teens, which restricts romantic and sexual chats and stops it claiming feelings for you. A parent can link accounts and set quiet hours.

you give up: It is an assistant, not a character app: no character library, and it will not be anyone's boyfriend or girlfriend. OpenAI also faces its own teen wrongful-death suit, Raine v. OpenAI, filed in 2025.

Khanmigo →

better: Khan Academy's tutor, and one thing it does is hold a conversation in the voice of a historical figure, the closest thing to a character chat that was built for students. $4 a month.

you give up: US only, and a parent has to sign up for anyone under 18. The characters come from history class, not fandom. Khan Academy's post on the feature dates from 2023, updated in 2025, so check the activity list before paying.

if you're leaving because the ads and the waiting got old

Talkie →

better: A library of user-made characters plus your own, from MiniMax, a Chinese AI company listed in Hong Kong. Its rules ban sexual content outright, suggestive included, stricter on paper than most apps here. Free on the web and Android, and on iPhone as Talkie Lab.

you give up: The original iPhone app left the US App Store in December 2024, and the Talkie Lab listing describes an AI toolbox, not character chat. Free means ads, paid plans start at $9.99 a month in the App Store, and its terms let 14-year-olds sign up with no age check described.

AI Dungeon →

better: A free tier whose App Store and Google Play listings declare no ads. You steer a story turn by turn instead of chatting with one character, with Story Cards and Plot Essentials kept beside it. Rated 13+ on the App Store, and its Safe setting blocks sexual, hateful and violent output.

you give up: The free tier holds 4K tokens of context and 25 memories, so long stories get trimmed from the start. Paid plans begin at $14.99 a month for 8K. The Mature setting unlocks with a self-confirmed 18+ checkbox, nothing stronger.

if you're leaving because the bots forget what happened yesterday

Kindroid →

better: You can download a portable copy of your data yourself every 30 days, where Character.AI's export takes weeks. It runs on subscriptions, not ads, and each companion keeps a backstory, key memories and long-term memory of past chats. Web, iPhone and Android.

you give up: 18+ only, checked through your card or a Yoti selfie or ID, and its App Store label lists sexual content. New accounts get 50 free messages, then it is $15.99 a month in the US App Store. No Character.AI import is documented, so you rebuild each character by hand.

Claude →

better: Put a character sheet and your story notes in a Project and every chat in it starts from them, with up to five Projects on the free plan. Its memory can carry details from one chat to the next.

you give up: 18+ only, and accounts that look younger are paused for a Yoti age check. Its usage policy bans erotic chats. No character library, a rolling five-hour limit on the free plan, and it trains on your chats unless you opt out.

Is Character AI shutting down?

Not yet, and maybe not at all. Character.AI filed for Chapter 11 in Delaware on October 12 to sell the company. It says the app keeps running and subscriptions stay active during the sale, which it expects to finish by late November or early December. If no buyer wants to keep the platform going, it will be wound down. Disney's $20 million opening bid is for a licence to some of its intellectual property, not the app.

The filing follows a run of lawsuits, including one from Kentucky's attorney general over harm to children. Request your export now under Profile Settings, Account, Manage Account & Data; Character.AI says it takes 3 to 4 weeks. Our Character AI safety page covers what a sale could mean for your chats.

Apps like Character AI, and the age each one is rated

Check the rating before you install, because it has moved. In the US App Store, Character.AI itself is now rated 18+, and so are PolyBuzz, Chai, Kindroid, Nomi and Replika. ChatGPT and AI Dungeon are 13+. Talkie is rated Teen on Google Play but 18+ on iPhone, where it is listed as Talkie Lab.

Parents, the name to look for is zeta, from Korea's Scatter Lab: US searches for "zeta ai" went from 590 a month to 368,000 in a year. It is rated 13+, lets 13 to 17-year-olds in once a parent agrees to the terms, and the same app has an adults-only mode that allows explicit content.

Websites like Character AI that run in a browser

Most picks here work in a browser: Talkie, Kindroid, AI Dungeon, ChatGPT, Claude and Khanmigo. SillyTavern and KoboldCpp open in your browser too, but the page is served from your own computer, not from a website.

If you used Character.AI on the web to browse other people's characters, Talkie works the same way: a public library, open one, chat.

Apps like Character AI with unlimited messages

Character.AI is one of the few: its free plan has unlimited messaging, with ads and slow mode when busy. Most alternatives meter you. Kindroid gives new accounts 50 messages, Claude's free plan runs on a rolling five-hour limit, and Talkie is free with ads and does not publish its free limits.

ChatGPT's free plan has no cap on text chats with its default model. SillyTavern has none either, since it is your software, but you pay the model provider unless you run a model yourself.

the catchPublic characters made by other people do not come with you, and your own chats leave only through an export that Character.AI says takes 3 to 4 weeks, with no official way to load it into anything on this list. A sale due to close in late November or early December leaves little slack, so ask for it today.

Character.AI alternatives: quick answers

Is Character AI free?

Yes. Messaging is unlimited on the free plan, with ads and slow mode when it is busy. (c.ai) lite is $4.99 a month for fewer ads and less waiting, and c.ai+ is $9.99 in the US App Store. Accounts verified as under 18 get reading mode, not chat.

Is Janitor AI better than Character AI?

It is built for something else. Janitor AI is adults only by its own rules, and its help center explains how to switch on NSFW content from the website, since the app keeps it off to meet App Store and Google Play rules. That adult focus is why it is not on this list.

Is Chai better than Character AI?

Only if you will pay. Chai Premium is $13.99 a month, while Character.AI's free plan stays unlimited with ads. Chai is 18+ and phone only, and says some regions need a subscription to use it at all; Character.AI also runs on the web and still lets teenagers sign up, though under-18s get no chat.

Can you use ChatGPT for roleplay?

Yes, if you write the character yourself: describe who it is and how it talks in your first message and it keeps the role. There is no library of ready-made characters to browse, and accounts in ChatGPT for Teens get extra limits on romantic and sexual chats.
