Few people leave ChatGPT because it ran out: the free plan now answers text chats without a cap. They leave over the rest of 2026: ads under answers on Free and Go, a boycott over OpenAI's Pentagon deal and its president's super PAC money, and a free plan that stops at three file uploads a day.

Stay on ChatGPT if you use it for everything, images, voice, files and projects, and the ads are your only complaint, because Plus at $20 has none and the free plan has a no-ads option with fewer messages and no image tools.
checked 2026-10-13 · ChatGPT is Free tier; Go is $8/mo in the US, Plus $20/mo, Pro $100, $200 or $500/mo. No annual billing. Free and Go may include ads. · by dan scutaru
better: No ads, and Anthropic has said in writing that Claude will stay ad-free. It would not drop its limits on mass surveillance and autonomous weapons for the Pentagon, and the weekend OpenAI took the deal instead, Claude passed ChatGPT to No. 1 on Apple's US App Store.
you give up: No image generation at all. Free runs Sonnet and Haiku on a rolling five-hour limit with no published number. Chats train Anthropic's models unless you switch it off, and Anthropic signed its own $200 million Pentagon prototype deal in July 2025.
better: Made by Mistral, a French company, so your subscription goes to a company outside the US. Pro is $14.99, or $5.99 for verified students, and the free plan has web search and basic image generation. It was called Le Chat until 28 May 2026.
you give up: It trains on your chats by default until you opt out, and free limits have no numbers. Not a clean break from defence work either: France's armed forces ministry gave Mistral a framework agreement in January 2026.
better: Proton says it keeps no logs, encrypts your history so even Proton cannot read it, and never trains on your chats or uses them for targeted ads. Guest mode needs no account.
you give up: It runs open models such as Qwen 3.5 and GLM 5.3, not GPT-6 or Claude, and harder questions show it. Free limits have no numbers; Plus is $12.99 a month.
better: ChatGPT Free's own model, GPT-6 Luna, with no account. DuckDuckGo strips your IP before the prompt reaches OpenAI, the providers agree not to train on it and to delete it within 30 days, and chats stay on your device. Image creation is free too.
you give up: A daily cap with no published number, and your chats live on one device unless you turn on sync. Adults only. The bigger models need DuckDuckGo's $9.99 a month Plus subscription.
better: Free, open source and able to run 100% offline on Mac, Windows or Linux, so nothing you type leaves the computer.
you give up: The model is only as good as your machine: Jan lists 16GB of RAM for a 7B model on a Mac, nowhere near GPT-6 on anything hard. Desktop only, and you manage the models yourself.
better: Image generation and editing, Deep Research and Gemini Live are on the free plan, with limits that refresh every five hours. It also imports your whole ChatGPT chat history from OpenAI's export file, which Claude cannot do.
you give up: Activity is on by default, so your chats train Google's models, and chats picked for human review are kept up to three years after you delete them. Free has a 32K context window, and the import skips the EEA, Switzerland and the UK.
better: Free, and basic chat opens without an account; signing in adds image creation, voice and longer chats. Microsoft says your prompts and files in the app do not train its foundation models.
you give up: Without Microsoft 365 you may see ads, so it does not fix that complaint. Microsoft picks the model, publishes no limits, and removed Deep Research from the consumer app on 18 August 2026.
better: Free with no paid plan, so there is no upgrade wall to hit, and it reads the photos and screenshots you upload.
you give up: Your chats are stored in China, kept while your account exists, and train its models unless you opt out. It cannot make images and needs an account.
better: Searches the web on every question and cites its sources, with practically unlimited basic searches free and no account needed to start.
you give up: Free gets 3 Pro Searches a day and no image generation. Searches train its AI until you opt out, and a citation is not a check: the link does not always say what the sentence says.
better: Already inside Google Search and works signed out. It takes follow-up questions, images, PDFs and voice, and answers come with links to the web.
you give up: Google is testing sponsored formats inside AI Mode, so you trade one set of ads for another. Your searches can be used to improve Google's AI, and the top model needs a paid plan.
All ten picks are free to start. Check what you are replacing first: ChatGPT Free answers text chats without a cap. It rations the rest, with 3 file uploads a day, limited images, no audio uploads and ads under answers.
So pick by what ran out: Gemini for images and research, Duck.ai for the same model with no account, Claude for no ads. Then count the other price. Gemini, Claude, Mistral, Perplexity and DeepSeek train on your chats by default, and our DeepSeek vs ChatGPT page covers where those chats are kept. Lumo, Duck.ai, Jan and Copilot say they do not.
Claude, Gemini, Copilot, Perplexity, DeepSeek and Lumo all have iPhone and Android apps; Duck.ai sits inside the DuckDuckGo browser app. Gemini is the closest to the ChatGPT app, with images and Gemini Live on the free plan. Claude's app is the one if ads drove you out, but it cannot make a picture.
The one already on your phone is Meta AI, inside WhatsApp, Instagram and Facebook. Since 16 December 2025 Meta uses what you tell it to personalize ads in most regions, with no opt-out.
Five work in a browser tab with no sign-up: Duck.ai, Copilot, Perplexity, Google AI Mode and Lumo's Guest mode, which erases the chat when the session ends. Our Copilot vs ChatGPT page explains which Copilot you are getting. DeepSeek needs an account.
ChatGPT itself works logged out too, one unsaved conversation at a time, except in Europe outside the UK. Those chats train OpenAI's models by default, and ads can show there as well.
QuitGPT was organized in late January 2026, after filings showed OpenAI president Greg Brockman and his wife gave $25 million to Trump's MAGA Inc. super PAC, and a DHS inventory listed ICE using a résumé screener built on GPT-4. It took off at the end of February, when OpenAI agreed to put its models on the Pentagon's classified network hours after the administration dropped Anthropic. Altman later called that rollout "opportunistic and sloppy" and added a ban on intentional domestic surveillance.
The campaign claims 4 million people; nobody has audited that. What can be measured: Claude went from outside the top 100 in January to No. 1 on Apple's US App Store on 28 February. Our Claude vs ChatGPT page compares what you get on the other side.
Export first: Settings, Data controls, Export. A ZIP arrives within up to 7 days, and the link expires after 24 hours. Gemini imports that ZIP whole, up to five files a day, for adults on personal Google accounts outside the EEA, Switzerland and the UK.
Claude cannot import chats at all. Settings, Memory, Start import takes only what ChatGPT remembers about you, on every plan including Free, and keeps mostly the work-related parts. Our ChatGPT page shows what you would be giving up.
Yes: unlimited text chats on GPT-6 Luna, with 3 file uploads a day and limited images. Ads may appear under answers on Free and on the $8 Go plan. The full answer →
Where you bought it: on chatgpt.com it is Settings, Billing, Cancel, and through the App Store or Google Play you cancel in that store. Uninstalling the app cancels nothing, deleting your account does not stop an Apple subscription, and you should cancel at least 24 hours before renewal.
For one job at a time, several things: Claude for long documents and code with no ads, Gemini if your mail and files live at Google, Perplexity for answers with sources. Nothing here beats ChatGPT at doing everything in one app. Our head-to-heads with Claude, Gemini and Perplexity go job by job.
Yes, at three levels: Duck.ai anonymizes your prompts, Lumo keeps no logs and encrypts your history, and Jan runs entirely on your own computer. Lumo and Jan run open models that trail GPT-6; Duck.ai runs GPT-6 Luna up to a daily cap. If you are staying, Is ChatGPT safe? covers its own privacy settings.
