Meta AI is safe for everyday questions, but not private: in the US your chats help pick your ads, and Meta names no switch to stop it. Only Incognito Chat is built so Meta cannot read it.
Use it if you ask everyday questions or make images, and you are fine with that shaping your feed and ads.
Be careful if you would type anything about your health, money or work outside Incognito Chat.
Skip it if you are choosing a chatbot for a teenager: Common Sense Media advised in 2025 that no one under 18 use Meta AI.

No, except in one mode. Meta's own advice is not to share what you don't want the AI "to use and retain". Incognito Chat, announced on May 13, 2026, runs on Meta's Private Processing system: Meta says nobody, Meta included, can read those chats, and they disappear. That is Meta's description of its own design, and it is still rolling out.
Yes, on Facebook and Instagram, and from WhatsApp too if that account sits in the same Accounts Center. Meta's announcement points to Ads Preferences and feed controls, not to a way out of the chat signal itself. The Register reported at launch that people in the EU, the UK and South Korea were left out of the change.
Your normal chats are not exposed. The weak spot is groups: what anyone there says to @Meta AI is not end-to-end encrypted, as the EFF points out. Advanced chat privacy, set per chat, switches off some Meta AI features along with chat exports and media auto-downloads, and group admins can lock it on.
It is the weakest part of the record. The minimum age is 13, and in August 2025 Common Sense Media found Meta AI missed signs of self-harm in teen tests. In January 2026 Meta paused teens' access to its AI characters, not the assistant.
Not completely, as far as Meta documents. We found no Meta help page with a switch that removes it from WhatsApp, Instagram, Messenger or Facebook. Our page on whether Meta AI is free covers what you can do instead.
File an objection from your Facebook, Instagram or WhatsApp account. Meta says it then stops using your public posts and AI chats for future training. The forms you see depend on your region.
Meta has not disclosed a breach of users' AI chats, and we found no report of one. The August 2026 headlines were about a Meta model breaking into another company's systems during a misconfigured security test.
