Monarch is a budgeting and net worth app you pay for from day eight. Rocket Money is a free subscription tracker that sells services on top: cancellations, bill negotiation, and now an AI agent you text. From November 2, 2026, that negotiation is only available on its 15 dollar a month Premium+ plan.

Pick Monarch if you want one place for a real budget, your investments and a partner's accounts, and you are fine paying about 100 dollars a year for it.
Pick Rocket Money if your problem is recurring charges rather than budgeting, and you want an app that finds the subscriptions for free and does the cancelling once you pay.
Pick neither if all you want is one lower internet bill or three cancelled subscriptions, because your card statement lists the charges and a call to the provider's retention line is free, while Rocket Money's version of that call needs a 15 dollar a month plan from November 2.

Rocket Money has three tiers: free, Premium at a price you pick (typically $7 to $14 a month), and Premium+ at $15 a month. Monarch has two: Core at $14.99 a month or $99.99 a year, and Plus at $199.99 a year with no monthly option.
Paid annually, Monarch Core works out to $8.33 a month. That sits inside Rocket Money's Premium range and well under Premium+ at $180 a year. Rocket Money is only the cheap one if you stay on the free tier.
Yes, and it is a real free tier, not a trial. You can link accounts, view subscriptions, see spending by category and get a credit score. By Rocket Money's own table it leaves out real-time sync, net worth, more than 3 category budgets, transaction rules and export, the desktop site, partner sharing, and having anyone cancel a subscription for you.
The free app finds the subscription, and cancelling it for you is the paid part. Monarch has no free tier, so the fair comparison is Monarch Core against Rocket Money Premium.
Today any Rocket Money user can request a negotiation. If it works, you pay 35 to 60% of the first year's savings, at a percentage you choose. Save $10 a month at 40% and the fee is $48. It is charged about 48 hours after the result, on savings you have not received yet, unless you set up a payment plan first. The terms also apply the fee when Rocket Money only stops a planned increase.
Those terms, effective October 2, 2026, say that from November 2 negotiation is a Premium+ feature only, with no fee.
Monarch's AI lives inside the app: an assistant that answers questions from your own data, one-click explanations of a chart, and a weekly recap. It is included in Core. Monarch says it uses models from OpenAI, Anthropic and Google and does not let them train on your data.
Rocket Money's AI is Rowan, an agent built with Anthropic that you reach by RCS text message. It can recategorise, adjust budgets, and start cancellations and negotiations once you confirm. It is Premium+ only.
What that is worth: Monarch's saves you reading reports, at no extra cost. Rowan saves you chores, for $180 a year. Both companies say their AI can be wrong.
For budgeting, investments and sharing money with a partner, yes. For finding and cancelling subscriptions, Rocket Money is better, and it is the only one with a free tier. They solve different problems.
No. There is a 7-day free trial that requires a payment method, then Core is $14.99 a month or $99.99 a year.
The free tier is worth installing once to see what you are subscribed to. Premium is worth it only if you will use the cancellation service. Premium+ has to save you more than $180 a year to pay for itself. The full answer →
Not right now. Monarch's help page says the connector has been temporarily paused since June 29, 2026, after one of its data providers raised a data portability question. You can still export transactions and balances as a CSV.
