Claude Pro is worth $20 a month only if the free plan stops you most days, or you want Claude Code. Anthropic does not publish how much usage Pro buys. You get "at least 5x" the free plan per five-hour session, a weekly limit with no number on it, and the newest Fable models billed separately.
Stay on Free if you rarely see the limit message, because free already has web search, files, code execution and memory.
Pay for Pro if the free plan cuts you off mid-task several times a week, or you want Claude Code, which Free does not include.
Skip it if you need to know in advance how much work a month covers, because no official page gives a number.

| plan | price | what matters |
|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | Up to 5 projects. No Claude Code, no Fable models. |
| Pro | $20/mo | Or $200 upfront for a year ($17/mo). Five-hour session limit plus a weekly limit. Fable on usage credits only. |
| Max 5x | $100/mo | 5x Pro's usage per session. Monthly billing only. Fable included, up to half the weekly limit. |
| Max 20x | $200/mo | 20x Pro's usage per session. |
| Usage credits | pay as you go | Prepaid, at standard API rates, for when a paid plan runs out. You set a monthly cap. |
There is no number. Pro has a session limit that resets every five hours and a weekly limit across all models, and neither is published as messages, tokens or hours. The "45 messages per five hours" quoted elsewhere is a third-party estimate. Anthropic never printed it.
What the help pages do say: usage depends on conversation length, the model, the features and the effort level. Chat, the desktop app and Claude Code draw from one allowance, so an afternoon of coding can leave you with no chat.
Max is the same product with a bigger allowance: 5x Pro's usage per session for $100, or 20x for $200. Since Pro's own figure is unpublished, 5x is a multiple of an unknown. The one concrete difference is Fable, which Max includes and Pro does not.
Start on Pro, billed monthly. If you hit the weekly limit two weeks running, or keep buying credits to reach Fable, move to Max 5x. The upgrade is prorated. Most people who do not code all day never get there.
Less than the price suggests, unless you code. Free already searches the web, creates files, runs code and remembers earlier chats. Pro adds Claude Code, more models and at least five times the usage per session.
So use the free plan for two weeks on real work and count how often it stops you. Once or twice is not a $240 problem. Most days is.
No standing trial is listed on Anthropic's pricing or help pages. It runs occasional limited-time promotions, generally only for people who never had a paid plan. The free plan is the trial.
Only if you already hit Pro's weekly limit, or want Fable models without paying per use. If Pro has never stopped you, Max buys nothing you would notice.
It saves $40 a year. But you prepay twelve months of an allowance with no published size, and payments are non-refundable outside the 14-day window for the EEA and UK. Pay monthly first.
No. Anthropic's help page says it offers no standard discounted pricing on any paid plan. Universities can buy an institution-wide plan, which your school signs, not you.
Yes. Pro is the cheapest plan with Claude Code, and it spends the same allowance as your chats.
