Yes, Gemini is free with a Google account, with no card and no trial clock, and the free plan includes image generation and Deep Research. What you do not get is a number. Google publishes no message count, and free users are the first to be cut when servers are busy.
Stay on the free plan if you ask questions, draft text and make the odd image a few times a day, because nothing in the free plan expires.
Pay if you keep hitting the limit mid-task or paste long documents, since $4.99 doubles the allowance and quadruples the context window.
Skip it if you do not want your chats used for training or read by human reviewers, which is the default and costs you your chat history to turn off.

There is a limit, and Google does not print it. The help page calls the free allowance "standard limits" and says it depends on how complex your prompt is, which features you use and how long the chat has run. It refreshes every 5 hours until you reach a weekly limit.
Limits "may change without notice", and when capacity is short, users without a plan are limited first. Deep Research is named as a feature that may be unavailable to free users at busy times.
US college students aged 18 and over can get Google AI Pro, the $19.99 plan, free for one year if they redeem by December 31, 2026.
It is a trial, so read the terms. A valid form of payment is required at sign-up, eligibility is checked again each year, and unless you cancel, Google charges $19.99 a month when the trial ends. Set a reminder the day you join.
Mostly quantity. Google lists the same Flash and Pro models on every plan, so the cheaper tiers do not unlock a smarter Gemini. They buy more of it: 2x the allowance on Plus, 4x on Pro, and a context window that goes from 32K tokens to 128K to 1 million.
What does sit behind payment is video generation and the Daily Brief from Plus, and Gemini Spark from Pro.
Partly. The free plan gets "varying access" to the 3.1 Pro model, with no stated amount. Google AI Pro, the plan, is $19.99 a month.
Yes. Image generation with Nano Banana 2 is on every Gemini plan, including the free one. Redoing an image with Nano Banana Pro needs Google AI Plus or higher, and Google gives no count of free images.
Nothing on the free plan. Google AI Plus is $4.99 a month, Pro is $19.99 and Ultra is $99.99 or $199.99. Pages that show Plus at $7.99 are quoting the price from before June 2026.
You do not need one, because the free plan has no end date. The only free offer on a paid plan we could confirm on a Google page today is the student one, which requires a payment method.
It has its own free tier, separate from the app. Google's API pricing page lists several Flash models as free of charge, and says content sent on the free tier is used to improve its products.
