Kinda. Speechify has a free plan with no time limit and no card, but it gives you 10 robotic voices at up to 1.5x speed. The natural voices in the ads are Premium, at $29 a month or $139 a year. The "free trial" is a different thing: it takes a payment method and turns into a paid plan after three days.
Stay on the free plan if you want articles and PDFs read aloud now and then and can live with a voice Speechify itself calls robotic.
Pay if you listen for hours every week, and then pay the $139 year on speechify.com, because five months at $29 already cost more.
Skip it if a robotic voice is all you need, since the screen reader built into your phone or computer already does that at any speed for nothing.

| plan | price | what matters |
|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | 10 robotic sounding voices, speed up to 1.5x, text to speech only, no card |
| Premium, billed monthly | $29/mo | 1,000+ natural voices, 60+ languages, faster speeds, scan and listen, AI summaries. Non-refundable |
| Premium, billed yearly | $139/yr | Same plan, about $11.58 a month, charged in one payment |
| Premium in the iPhone app | $139.99 or $159.99/yr | Same plan bought through Apple, which also handles refunds and cancellation |
Premium is one plan with two prices, and the gap is large. Twelve months at $29 come to $348, against $139 for the year paid at once. The yearly plan is cheaper from month five.
The trade is the refund. Speechify refunds a yearly payment only if you ask within 7 days and have used no more than 500 HD words, which is a few minutes of listening. Monthly, quarterly and discounted subscriptions are non-refundable. Anything bought through Apple or Google is final on Speechify's side.
The trial is Premium for a few days, and it bills you. Speechify's terms set it at three days unless sign-up says otherwise, and state that it converts to a paid plan at the current price, charged to the payment method you gave at sign-up, unless you cancel first.
If you only want the free plan, do not start the trial. If you start it, cancel the same day. You keep Premium until the trial ends either way.
It works as a plain reader. You can paste text, open a document or a web page and have it read aloud on any device, with no word allowance printed anywhere on the pricing page.
What you cannot do is go fast. People who listen to get through reading quicker usually want 2x or more, and the free plan stops at 1.5x.
On the web, log in at app.speechify.com, click your photo, open Settings and choose Cancel Subscription. If you subscribed in the iPhone or Android app, cancel with Apple or Google instead. Cancelling stops the next charge only, with no pro-rated refund.
Yes. Speechify says verified students get 25% off Premium through UNiDAYS, and that US K-12 students can qualify for Premium at no cost through its education program with academic verification. College students do not get it free.
The natural voices, 60+ languages, faster playback, scanning, AI summaries and cloud imports. It is not unlimited: Speechify guarantees 150,000 Premium voice words a month, raised to 1,000,000 for 2026. Past the limit, the terms allow a downgrade to standard voices.
At $139 a year, for someone who listens daily, it can be. At $29 a month it rarely is. Try the free plan first, then one cheaper reader, before you give anyone a card.
