Yes, GitHub Copilot has a free plan you can keep: 2,000 code completions a month plus a small, unpublished allowance of chat and agent use. It has no end date and needs only a GitHub account. Since June 2026 chat and agents run on AI credits, and GitHub does not say how many the free plan gets.
Stay on the free plan if you code a few evenings a week and mostly want inline suggestions, because 2,000 completions a month covers that.
Pay if you hit the completion cap or want to choose the model, since $10 removes the cap and adds 1,500 credits, the cloud agent and pull request reviews.
Skip it if you want an agent to work for hours on a fixed monthly bill, because every paid plan meters agent work by the token.

One number and one blank. The number is 2,000 completions. The blank is chat and agent use: GitHub's plan table says "Limited chat and agent usage" and its docs say "an allowance of GitHub AI Credits", with no figure.
The "50 chat requests" quoted everywhere, including in the FAQ on GitHub's own plans page, dates from before usage-based billing. A short question now costs a fraction of a credit and a long agent run costs many.
Verified students get Copilot Student at no cost: unlimited completions, the cloud agent, code review, and 200 AI credits a month according to GitHub's June 2026 announcement. Like Free, it picks the model for you. Students lost manual access to the top Claude and GPT models in March 2026.
Verified teachers and maintainers of popular open source projects can get Copilot Pro free instead. GitHub rechecks eligibility every month.
Premium requests ended on June 1, 2026. Now every chat, agent and CLI interaction is priced by the tokens it uses on the model that ran it, and converted to AI credits at 1 credit to $0.01. Completions and next edit suggestions use no credits.
Only subscribers on an old annual Pro or Pro+ plan still count premium requests. When that plan expires they drop to Free.
On a paid plan you wait for the reset, upgrade for the price difference, or set a dollar budget and continue at $0.01 a credit. GitHub may cap additional usage on individual plans until you pay what you owe.
Unused credits do not roll over. The flex part of the allowance, a third of Pro's and half of Max's, is described by GitHub as variable. The plans page lists monthly prices only.
Not at the moment. GitHub paused Copilot Pro trials in April 2026, citing abuse, and we found no announcement that they are back. The free plan is the way to try it.
Nothing on Free, then $10, $39 or $100 a month for individuals and $19 or $39 per seat for teams. Usage past the included credits is $0.01 a credit, and only if you set a budget.
Yes if completions are what you use, since $10 makes them unlimited and they never touch your credits. For heavy agent work, 1,500 credits is $15 of model usage.
No. GitHub Copilot is the coding assistant in your editor and on GitHub. Microsoft Copilot is a separate general chat assistant with its own plans, and GitHub's plans page lists no bundle between them.
