No, Midjourney is not free. It has no free plan and no free trial on its website or in Discord, and the cheapest plan is $10 a month. That plan buys 200 minutes of generation with no slow unlimited mode behind it, and every image you make is public unless you pay $60.
Pay for Basic if you want the Midjourney look for a few hundred images a month and do not mind them appearing on the public Explore page.
Pay for Standard if you generate most days, because $30 is where unlimited Relax mode starts and the meter stops mattering.
Skip it if you need a handful of images now and then, since Gemini, ChatGPT and Ideogram all make them on a free plan.

There is no free trial where you would look for one. Midjourney's help page says it in one line: no free trial is currently available in Discord or on the midjourney.com website.
The one exception is niji journey, the anime-focused sister app for iOS and Android, which has what Midjourney calls a limited trial, with no image count given. Pages that still promise 25 free images are describing a trial from 2024.
Time. Basic gives you 200 minutes of Fast GPU time a month and nothing behind it. By Midjourney's own table a standard prompt costs 0.8 minutes, an HD prompt 1.3, and a creative upscale 2, so the month is roughly 150 to 250 prompts, fewer if you upscale.
Other plans drop into Relax mode and keep going, slowly. Basic has none. When the minutes are gone you buy more at $4 an hour, upgrade, or wait for renewal. Unused minutes do not carry over, and purchased hours expire after 60 days.
Three image generators have a free plan today that does not expire. Gemini includes image generation and editing on its free plan, with no published count. ChatGPT's free plan includes image generation, also limited. Ideogram gives eligible free accounts slow credits every week, one generation at a time.
None of them is a free Midjourney, and none prints an exact free allowance. Ideogram's free images cannot be made private either.
$10, $30, $60 or $120 a month, or 20% less paid yearly upfront. Yearly billing is selected by default at checkout, so the first charge is $96 rather than $10 unless you switch to the monthly tab.
You cannot, beyond the limited trial in the niji journey app. Midjourney does hand out free Fast time for rating images, an hour a day to the top 2,000 raters, but you need an active subscription to use it.
Midjourney lists none. Its education page says each student needs their own account and their own subscription, and that there are no shared or group plans for schools.
Only if you have used less than 20 GPU minutes over the lifetime of your account, which is about 20 prompts. Extra Fast hours are never refunded.
Yes, on every paid plan, including Basic. The exception is a company with more than $1,000,000 a year in gross revenue, which needs Pro or Mega. Midjourney gives no advice on copyright itself.
