Ideogram existed because no other image model could spell. ChatGPT's image model spells fine now, so the real question is whether you need control over the output or just a picture by tonight.

Pick Ideogram if you need repeatable output: the same character across ten images, a layout you specify rather than describe, text you can retype after the fact, or weights you can run on your own hardware.
Pick ChatGPT if you want one poster, you want to fix it by talking to it in sentences, and nothing downstream depends on reproducing it exactly.
Pick neither if the thing you are making is a logo, because what comes out is a picture of a logo with no vector file behind it, and nobody to call when it has to survive being shrunk to a favicon.

Both spell now. ChatGPT runs Images 2.5, released on 8 September, and OpenAI says it handles more complex layouts than the model before. Ideogram's 95% text accuracy figure is its own number, and we found no current independent head-to-head, so ignore anyone who quotes one.
The difference is what you do when a word is wrong. In ChatGPT you select the area and describe the fix, and Images 2.5 is better than the last model at leaving the rest alone. In Ideogram you can place each line of text with a bounding box in a JSON prompt, then turn the lettering into editable type in Studio and retype the word.
Either gets you a usable logo concept in minutes. ChatGPT has a logo template under Images and will make the background transparent if you ask. Ideogram's own guide points you to its 4.0 Transparent model, and a 1K transparent PNG is free on every plan.
Neither gives you a vector. Ideogram's download menu offers JPEG, PNG and WEBP, and ChatGPT hands you an image, not a file a printer can scale. If the mark has to live on a sign and a favicon, budget for someone to redraw it.
Ideogram tells you what you are buying and ChatGPT does not. Ideogram Plus is $20 a month for 2,400 priority credits, Pro is $60 for 7,500, unused credits expire each month, and after that you drop to a slow queue where AI editing and reference images stop working. A credit is not an image: the cost depends on the model, quality and size.
ChatGPT puts Images 2.5 on every tier, Free included, and publishes no image count for any of them. You find your limit when you hit it. Images with thinking is on Plus, Pro and Business only.
For the same mascot across ten images, Ideogram gives you more handles. Ideogram 4.5 takes one to five reference images of the character, you call it by its tag in the prompt, and every model has a seed you can reuse. The catch is that style references, colour palettes and negative prompts work only on Ideogram 3.0, so you cannot lock the character and the style in one image.
ChatGPT works from the conversation instead. OpenAI says Images 2.5 is better at preserving the subjects in your reference photos and keeps earlier edits intact over longer conversations.
Both have an API. Only Ideogram lets you download a model: Ideogram 4.0's quantized weights are on Hugging Face, and its team says they fit on a single 24GB GPU. They are free for research and personal projects only. Commercial self-hosting is a $300 a month license, which is why one Hacker News commenter objected to calling it open-weight at all.
The odd part is that Ideogram now sells OpenAI too. Paid plans run GPT Image 2.0 and 2.5 inside Ideogram, on the same credits, next to its own models. If you pay for Ideogram, you can try ChatGPT's image model without leaving it.
Yes. OpenAI says ChatGPT Images, now on the Images 2.5 model, is available on all tiers, Free included. The free allowance is limited and OpenAI does not publish the number, so the limit notice in your own account is the only reliable figure.
Yes, with a small weekly allowance: Ideogram's docs give 30 credits a week to accounts that sign in with Google, Apple or Microsoft, and none to email-and-password accounts. Everything you make on the free plan is published to the public feed, and private generations start at Plus for $20 a month.
OpenAI does not say, for any plan. Figures like two or three a day on Free come from third-party guides, not from OpenAI. If you need a known number of images a month, Ideogram's credit plans are the one of the two that states it.
Yes. ChatGPT Images has a logo template and can make the background transparent. What you get is a raster image, not a vector file, so it works for a profile picture or a mockup and needs redrawing before it goes on a sign or a printed product.
