How to tell if an image is AI generated before you trust a detector

Start with where the picture came from, not with its pixels. A reverse image search finds earlier copies, larger versions and often the first account that posted it. If the picture claims to show a real place or event, checking where it was taken is a test a generator can fail.

Then look at what generators still get wrong: lettering that dissolves into nonsense, odd hands and body parts, details that do not match from one side to the other. Treat these as hints, because they fade with every new model. In an experiment by Microsoft researchers, with about 287,000 judgments from more than 12,500 people, players sorted real from AI images correctly 62% of the time.

Every pick above has a free check; what differs is the limit. The first detector, the content-label reader and one of the two watermark checkers take an upload with no account. The second detector runs some free checks before asking you to sign up, then 2,000 operations a month on its free tier. The last pick stops at 20 image checks, with paid plans from $5 a month.

The other watermark checker needs a Google account and allows about 10 images a day. Paid plans buy volume plus video and voice checks, which matters if you moderate uploads, not if you have one picture to check. Whatever you use, upload the largest, earliest copy you can find: one vendor's own FAQ says screenshots and extreme compression reduce accuracy.

Is this image AI generated? The labels and watermarks that settle it

A label built in by the generator is the only check that can say yes with confidence. Images from two of the major generators now carry the same invisible watermark, designed to survive cropping, filters and compression, and each maker runs a free checker for its own images; both are in the list above. One of them says false positives are rare.

The other kind is content credentials: a signed record of which tool made or edited a file, used by some generators, camera makers and news organizations, and readable with the free inspector above. Both work in one direction only. A screenshot or a file conversion strips the credentials, heavy edits can erase a watermark, and tools that add neither leave nothing to find. A missing label proves nothing.

AI art detector scores: why human artists get flagged

On drawings and paintings, which detector you use matters enormously. In a peer-reviewed 2024 study on human artwork in seven styles and AI images from five generators, the best commercial detector scored 98% and never flagged a human piece, while two other commercial tools flagged 24% and 67% of the human art as AI. With the anti-copying filters some artists add, the best one fell to 81%.

So a single score is a weak basis for accusing an artist or rejecting a commission. If you make the work, keep what a detector cannot argue with: layered source files, sketches and process recordings. If you are judging someone else's, ask for those before you trust a percentage.

How do AI image detectors work, and what breaks them?

They are classifiers: models trained on large sets of real and AI-made images to pick up the statistical traces a generator leaves, returning a probability rather than a finding. They do best on full-size files from generators they were trained on and worse on anything new; one vendor warns that a freshly released generator is detected less reliably at first.

In a 2024 benchmark of five commercial detectors, the best caught 96% to 100% of images generated from a text prompt, but as few as 25% of images made by AI-editing an existing picture. Compression hurts too: in a 2023 test by an investigative newsroom, one popular detector caught all 100 original AI images, then passed 7 of 10 compressed copies as human-made.

What is the best AI image detector?

There is no single winner, because independent tests are few and each covers different images. The first two picks above each came out on top in one: the first scored 98% on artwork without flagging a single human piece, the second led five commercial tools in a separate academic benchmark. Run both, and when they disagree, treat the image as unresolved.

Are AI image detectors accurate?

The best ones are, on clean, full-size files; many others are not. In the same 2024 art study, the share of human artwork wrongly flagged ranged from 0% to 67% across three commercial tools, and accuracy drops on compressed copies and AI edits, as shown above. Can an AI image detector spot deepfakes?

Partly. A real photo with a swapped face is a different problem from a fully generated picture, and the three detectors above each add a check for manipulated faces. Independent results are sobering: in a 2025 study by Australia's national science agency and a Korean university, none of 16 leading deepfake detectors could reliably identify real-world deepfakes.

Is this photo AI generated, or just edited with AI?

Detectors are much better at the first question. A real photo with one AI-edited area, a removed object or a new sky, is mostly genuine pixels, and in one benchmark the best commercial tool caught as few as a quarter of images made by AI-editing an existing picture. Content credentials can record edits as well as origin, when the editing app attaches them and nothing strips them.
