Is Canva free?

YES · a real free plan

Yes, Canva is free to use with no end date: the editor, 1.6 million templates, PDF and PNG export and 5 GB of storage cost nothing. The AI is the part that is rationed. Canva Free gets up to 20 AI uses a month, and the background remover and Magic Resize are paid only.

Stay on the free plan if you make a few posts, flyers or slides a month from free templates and can live with about 20 AI generations.

Pay for Pro if you remove backgrounds, resize designs or generate images every week, because those are the things Free withholds.

Skip it if you came only for AI image or video generation, since 20 uses a month will not last a serious user a week.

what the free plan includes

what it leaves out

the catchThe free plan is generous with templates and stingy with the tools you reach for most. Sooner or later you need a transparent background or the same design in three sizes, and both are paid. The AI numbers are "up to", and the trial meant to show you Pro runs on the free plan's AI.

Is Canva AI free? Yes, about 20 times a month

Canva AI is free in a small dose. Canva Free gets "up to 20 uses of Standard AI tools, or Premium AI tools" a month from one shared pool, and no Ultra tier. Image generation, Magic Layers, Canva Code and generating a whole design all draw from it, and complex tasks use more, so 20 is a ceiling.

The pool resets at midnight UTC on the first of each month. Pro gets up to 200 Premium uses, or 20 Ultra.

Canva Pro free trial: Pro features, free-plan AI

The trial unlocks Pro's templates and tools but not Pro's AI. Canva states that the allowance during a trial "is the same as Canva Free", so you stay on 20 uses, with no Ultra tools, until you start paying.

It is offered once per account and once per payment method, and the plan renews automatically unless you cancel. Canva's pricing and help pages do not print how long the trial lasts, so check the end date on your Billing page.

Canva for students and teachers: free for K-12 only

Canva Education is free and includes most premium features, but only for certified K-12 teachers and the students they invite.

College and university students are listed as not eligible, as are lecturers and unlicensed homeschool educators. Higher education goes through Canva Campus, which the institution buys. If your university has not, you are on Canva Free like everyone else.

Canva: quick answers

How much is Canva Pro?

US$144 a year for one person on Canva's pricing page. Month by month costs more: Apple's US App Store lists Canva Pro monthly at $18. Pages quoting $119.99 a year are out of date.

What is the difference between Canva Free and Pro?

Mostly the one-click tools. Pro adds the background remover, Magic Resize, the eraser and expand tools, the premium library, 100 GB instead of 5 GB and ten times the AI allowance. Designing, exporting and sharing work the same on both.

Is Canva free for nonprofits?

Yes, for registered charities. Canva for Nonprofits gives all Pro features to one team of up to 50 users at no cost. Government bodies, political organizations and schools are excluded.

Does Canva Free put a watermark on designs?

Only on premium elements. A premium photo, graphic or template shows a watermark until you buy that element or upgrade to a paid plan.
