CapCut is a legitimate app, but only kinda safe: by default it shares your data for targeted ads and takes a perpetual licence to what you upload. In the US a joint venture runs it now, with ByteDance keeping 19.9%.
Use it if you edit your own clips for social and switch off ad sharing on day one.
Be careful if it is for a teenager, or the footage shows people who never agreed to be filmed.
Skip it if you edit client, NDA or private footage, because the terms call every upload non-confidential and license it forever.

ByteDance, in part. Since January 2026, US CapCut has been run by TikTok USDS Joint Venture LLC, created so TikTok could stay legal, and ByteDance keeps 19.9% of it. The joint venture says US data sits in Oracle's US cloud. CapCut's own US privacy policy does not say where.
Some things did not move. The App Store still lists Bytedance Pte. Ltd. as seller, and outside the US the policy says data is stored in Malaysia, Singapore and the US.
You keep ownership; CapCut gets nearly everything else. The US terms say "We don't own your User Content", then grant the joint venture and its partners "an unconditional, non-exclusive, royalty-free, fully transferable, sub-licensable, perpetual and worldwide license to use your User Content", to operate and develop the service.
Another clause covers your name and likeness "including for use in sponsored content". This wording drew criticism after the mid-2025 terms update. It is still there.
13, and under 18 only with a parent's consent, per the terms. The 12+ App Store rating does not lower that. Qustodio, which sells parental controls, advises against it under 16, citing TikTok-style templates and contact with strangers. The licence on uploads has no exception for minors, so the parent's real job is deciding what footage goes in.
No, they are siblings. ByteDance built both, and in the US both are now run by TikTok USDS Joint Venture.
Not in the US. It was pulled with TikTok on January 19, 2025 and returned to the app stores on February 13, 2025.
No, ownership stays with you. CapCut holds a perpetual licence to use them, and it survives after you leave.
No. The terms set the minimum age at 13, and the privacy policy says CapCut is not intended for younger children.
It says it does not sell data for money but shares it for targeted ads. Its Google Play label, written by the developer, says "No data shared with third parties".
