Google Translate is a utility that works on a menu, in a tunnel, with no signal. ChatGPT is better at meaning and useless the second your phone drops data. Most people need both, for different minutes of the day.

Pick Google Translate if you are moving: pointing a camera at a sign, holding a conversation at a counter, or offline in a country whose alphabet you cannot read.
Pick ChatGPT if the text matters more than the speed, and getting the register wrong would embarrass you. A contract clause, a joke, a message to someone's parents.
Pick neither if the document is official, because visas, courts, diplomas and immigration files still want a certified human translator's stamp, and neither of these produces one.

ChatGPT Translate is a separate page at chatgpt.com/translate, launched quietly on 15 January 2026. It looks like Google Translate on purpose: two panes, automatic language detection, and a page title that promises 40+ languages. What it adds is a row of rewrites under the result: make it sound more fluent, make it professional, explain it like I'm five. Launch coverage says picking one moves you into a normal ChatGPT chat.
Today the box also takes dictation and photo uploads, and has a live translation button. What it still lacks against Google is breadth: no offline mode, no camera you point at a sign, and 40-odd languages where Google added 110 in a single 2024 release.
Accurate enough for Spanish, shakier the further you go from it. A 2021 study of emergency department instructions found Google Translate kept the meaning of 82.5% of them overall, from 94% in Spanish down to 55% in Armenian.
A 2026 paper in BMJ Quality & Safety ran the same kind of test against ChatGPT-4. Sentence by sentence, ChatGPT was 97% accurate in Spanish against Google's 96%, 95% against 90% in Chinese, and 89% against 80% in Russian. Across whole instruction sets, 56% of ChatGPT's Russian sets and 66% of Google's had at least one error. Both studies predate Google moving Translate to Gemini, so read them as a direction, not a score.
Download a language in the Translate app while you have Wi-Fi and it keeps working without a connection, camera included: Google's help page says camera translation works for the languages you downloaded. That is the whole case for Google on a plane, in a metro, or abroad without roaming.
ChatGPT and ChatGPT Translate run on OpenAI's servers, so with no data they do nothing. If you are travelling, download your languages before you leave and save ChatGPT for the hotel Wi-Fi, when you have time to ask what the sign actually meant.
For a spoken conversation, Google has the more finished feature. Live translate in the Translate app works with any pair of headphones, detects more than 70 languages, and since June runs on Google's Gemini 3.5 Live Translate model, rolling out globally on Android and iOS. Android also has a listening mode: you hold the phone to your ear like a call.
ChatGPT does it inside voice mode: you ask it to translate and it keeps going. Since July, free accounts get the smaller GPT-Live-1 mini voice model and paid plans get GPT-Live-1. It works, but it is a chat that happens to translate, and it needs a connection the whole time.
For tone, idioms and a message where the wording matters, usually yes: in a 2026 study of hospital instructions ChatGPT-4 was as accurate as Google Translate or more in Spanish, Chinese and Russian. For speed, offline use, the camera and rare languages, no. Google has also moved Translate onto Gemini since that study was run.
Yes. Since December 2025 it translates text with Gemini models, starting with English and nearly 20 languages in the US and India, and Live translate runs on Gemini 3.5 Live Translate. Google also launched Understand and Ask buttons in the US and India apps, which explain a translation's tone and take follow-up questions.
