ChatGPT is still one product at $20 a month. Grok stopped being one on 12 October 2026: new subscribers now buy The X Subscription, a single plan that bundles Grok, the Cursor coding agent and X Premium, from $8. So the real question is whether you want X and Cursor on the same bill as your chatbot.

Pick Grok if you already pay for X Premium or Cursor, or you want answers that read live X posts, because the $30 Premium plan now covers what xAI says used to cost $90 across SuperGrok, Cursor Pro and X Premium+.
Pick ChatGPT if you want an assistant with no social network or code editor attached, unlimited text chats even on the free plan, and published limits you can plan around.
Pick neither if you want to paste client, patient or employer data into a personal plan, because both can train on personal-plan chats until you find the opt-out, so keep that data out or use a business plan.

You can no longer buy SuperGrok. Since 12 October, xAI sells new subscribers The X Subscription instead, and the comparable tier is Premium at $30: SuperGrok's benefits, Cursor Pro and X Premium+, with 4x the usage of the $8 Plus plan. Existing SuperGrok subscribers keep their plan and price, and xAI says it will eventually move them, with notice.
ChatGPT Plus is $20 and buys reasoning models, expanded deep research and memory, custom GPTs and more Codex, with no ads. If you would not use Cursor or X, Premium costs $10 more for a chatbot.
Both now bundle a coding agent, and that is the comparison that matters. Every X Subscription plan includes Cursor's agent, Free as a starter allowance, with cloud agents, code hosting and Bugbot reviews from Premium. ChatGPT includes Codex on every plan, limited on Free and Go, expanded on Plus with the CLI and IDE extension.
The difference is what you can see. OpenAI prints a range per model per five hours. xAI says Premium is 4x Plus and never says what Plus is. We print no benchmark: give both the same real bug before you pay.
For still images both free plans give you a limited allowance and neither says how many. Video is where they split. Grok's video generation starts at Premium, $30, not on the $8 Plus plan, and ChatGPT's pricing page does not list video at all.
Two Grok details nobody mentions: every image and video carries a Grok watermark with no setting to remove it, and 720p video drops to 480p once you hit your tier's 720p cap.
People switch in both directions, and for moods rather than benchmarks. On Hacker News one user gave up on ChatGPT for research and moved to Grok and Gemini, while another said Grok had recently got much worse and went back to ChatGPT.
The most common position is neither: users who rotate between free tiers because, as one put it, the chatbots "are interchangeable". We could not read Reddit directly, so nothing here is quoted from it.
Not across the board. Grok is better if you want live X posts in your answers or would use Cursor and X Premium anyway. ChatGPT is better if you want unlimited free text chats, published limits and a $20 plan with no ads. On an everyday question most people cannot tell them apart.
Yes. The free plan includes limited chat, image generation and Grok Build, plus a starter allowance for Cursor's agent. It does not include video, Grok Bot or the API, and xAI publishes no number for the limits. The full answer →
Only as private as your settings. xAI may use your chats to train its models unless you switch off "Improve the model" under Settings, Data, and authorised staff may review conversations. Private Chat is not used for training and is deleted within 30 days. A shared link can be indexed by search engines if you post it publicly.
Not as a new subscriber: SuperGrok is closed to new sign-ups. Premium at $30 replaces it and adds Cursor Pro and X Premium+. If you already pay for SuperGrok, nothing changes until you switch, so read the offer in your billing settings first.
